Independent Project #1 (Nabil & Justin)

Definitely not what we were hoping to accomplish, however we are somewhat satisfied with the outcome!

Programs used include Photoshop (credits), Cinema 4D (outro), and After Effects (everything else). The text for the introduction was produced in Cinema 4D to create a PNG sequence, and then that was imported into After Effects. From there we added particles, a gradient background, a ripple effect, and some color correction to generate our final product.

One of the key factors for all these effects was getting solid tracking. Most of the tracking used was done with the built in Camera Tracker. However, the newer versions of After Effects also come with Mocha, which allowed us to track the explosion effect. I had to use Mocha because I needed to do planar tracking, which the Camera Tracker doesn't offer. Although, the 3D composite of the plane was tracked into the shot using only the Camera Tracker. The Alien Surface effect was suppose to include Justin, however due to some blending issues, we decided to just use the matte painting paired with the tracker data to make it seem as if it was a recording on some other planet.

The portal effect required a green screen, which with solid lighting, keyed out quite well. However, with more securing done to the sheet itself, we would have been able to avoid the line caused by the shadow that you see in the edit.

Overall, the project could have been completed a lot more smoothly and executed better with more detailed planning.

Hopefully you enjoy!

I was very impressed with the overall production value, it was basically professional, this is one of the best projects I've seen. Only critique I have is the same as Courtney's, in the edited shot with the airplane the colors seemed somewhat over saturated, but that might have been your intention.

Awesome!

Some of the colors seemed a little over saturated but over all this video was amazing! The effects were done really well and it was cool to see all of the behind the scenes action.
